About Me
Laurie Carlson Steger is a master weaver who began weaving in the 1960’s at summer camp, and at the Worcester Center for Crafts in the 1970’s. At the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, she earned a BFA in Textile Design and MFA in Artisanry/Fibers. She explored weaving with fiber optic materials and consulted in the field of smart textile applications in the 1990’s. As a fiber artist making wall decor, her artwork combines many textile processes from weaving to surface embellishment.
My Craft
Using many types of looms, from small tapestry looms, four and eight harness floor looms and a Thread Controller (TC-2) Jacquard loom, she creates colorful and impressionistic images. Inspirations come from many sources, found in nature, science and human connection. Her work has been included in Complex Weavers, Handweavers Guild of America, Fiberart International, Fiberart Now: Excellence in Fibers, Fuller Craft Museum and London Hat Week, among others. She taught Textile Science at Boston area colleges, and has led workshops/lectures at many weaving guilds and other textile organizations.
